MIDSUMMER DAYDREAM

Walking along the ocean
On a bright summer’s day,
I paused and cast a glance
Into the water, on my way

I leaped back a-shaking,
Afraid to look back in,
A mermaid there, was lying,
Her hand under her chin

She floated up to question,
What is the time of day?
It was a summer afternoon
Right in the month of May!

Scales glistened in the sunlight,
Her tail was curled at rest,
Beads of coral covering
Lay wreathed on her chest

Her eyes were smoky emerald,
Her skin a tawny shade,
Red curls came a-cascading
Up to her waist in braids

A dazzling vision from the sea
This nymphet as she lay,
I rubbed my eyes in my surprise,
‘Twas a sunny day in May!

And as I stared in disbelief,
She rose to her full height,
Then swishing deep into the sea,
She vanished from my sight.

Was it real, was it a dream?
I swear, I cannot say,
All I know, this happening
Was in the month of May!
