MOTHER DEAREST (A CHILD’S PLEA)
O mother dearest, sing to me
And cast away my fears
Bereft, I drown in misery
Unchecked the flow of tears
And loneliness alone’s my guide
No hand to hold me firm
Without you, mother, by my side
An orphan, that’s my term
In dreams I feel your soft caress
Your constant presence strong
Your hand laid on my head to bless
To teach me right from wrong
And then by sudden jerk I wake
Eyes searching for your face
Fearful, lest my dream should break and
Forever my hopes erase
I’m still a child, O mother mine
Unsure of step and tread
Still waiting for your clasp divine
To cradle me to bed.
